Storm Damage Roof Documentation Checklist

After a monsoon storm damages your roof, good records make every next step easier, whether or not you file a claim. This checklist follows public guidance from the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) and FEMA. It can't tell you what your insurer will decide. Your policy and your insurer decide that.

Safety first

Don't climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Photograph from the ground or from a window.

Before you clean up

  • Photograph and video the damage from several angles, with something in the frame for scale.
  • Photograph the inside too: ceiling stains, wet insulation, damaged belongings.
  • Write down the date and time of the storm and when you first noticed the damage.
  • Keep pieces of debris (broken tile, shingles) if it's safe to.

Contact your insurer promptly

  • Report the damage, and ask how they want photos and estimates sent.
  • Write down the claim number and the name of everyone you talk to, with dates.
  • Ask what the deductible is and what your policy covers.

Reasonable temporary repairs

Triple-I and FEMA say to make reasonable temporary repairs to prevent more damage (a tarp, covering openings), and to keep the receipts. Don't make permanent repairs until your insurer says it's OK; the adjuster may need to see the damage.

  • Save receipts for temporary repairs and materials.

Get it in writing

  • A written inspection report or scope from a licensed roofer, with photos of the damage and where on the roof it is.
  • Written estimates. Check the roofer's ROC license first.
